This year national Arthritis Week coincides with Seniors Week and in Wollongong anyone with the debilitating condition or an interest in it, is invited to attend a public meeting.
Treasurer of Wollongong branch of the Arthritis Foundation, Marie Roodenrys, said the regional general meeting would be held in the function room at Wollongong City Council next Tuesday.It will be opened by branch patron Senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells and chaired by foundation chief executive officer Phillip Hopkins.Anyone interested in attending the meeting, at which reports will be given by seven branches in the region, should register with secretary Dot Modder 4228 1576.Meanwhile an arthritis information stall will be set up in the Crown St Mall on Friday.Arthritis NSW will hold a seminar Living Well with Arthritis on Thursday evening at the Menzies Hotel, Sydney, which will include presentations by a rheumatologist, an occupational therapist, a dietitian to discuss healthy eating and a fitness/exercise instructor to explain appropriate forms of exercise for arthritis sufferers.The seminar is free but registrations should be made by calling 9683 1622.Meanwhile on Sunday the NSW Young Adults with Arthritis support group has organised a family picnic day at Lane Cove National Park.Further details from the above phone number.The pain and inflammation of arthritis cannot be avoided by the majority of people as the body ages and it is a fact that most people over the age of 50 show some signs of the disease.A website which stated that there were more than 100 types of arthritis and rheumatic diseases including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia also says about 70 million people in the USA were affected to some degree.The chronic disease, which is diagnosed through a blood test, can be managed with a combination of exercise, rest, weight management, nutrition and in some cases surgery.
