CHILDREN at Maryland Public School participated in the national Walk Safely to School Day on April 7 this year.

At Maryland Public School, 22 children ride bikes, 186 children walk to school and all the other students arrive either by bus or car.

Children on this day were encouraged to walk to school safely, and children under 10 were asked to hold their parent's or older sibling's hands.

Children who walked to school were greeted at the schools gate and recognised with a sticker.

More people have been walking to school since the event, according to Daniele Clements, the deputy prime minister of Maryland's school parliament.

"We have learnt that students have found an enjoyable and easy way to have a daily exercise ever since we had Walk to Safely to School Day," Daniele said.

Some students have been enjoying walking to school so much that they have now formed bike riding clubs.

Children gather at a chosen place and ride to school together, which is great fun and great exercise as well, the club members say.
